Bengal Warriors, lying at the bottom of the table, pulled off a surprise win over Patna Pirates 30-28 in the ProKabaddi League at the Port indoor stadium here on Monday night.

Mahesh Goud was the hero for Bengal scoring consistently as the team came back from a 11-14 first-half deficit. Mahesh substituted Sunil in the first half and came up with his best display. On the other side, Rakesh went out with an injury and Patna felt his absence. Only Sandeep Narwal was scoring while Dalal was off-colour.

A lona made possible by Mahesh saw the team taking a 23-21 lead and Bengal kept its rival in check. Mithun was picking up some valuable points as Bengal was going steady. The Bengal team scored two lonas though Patna was ahead in bonus points at 3-2.

The Pirates’ loss — the team is at second place now behind U Mumba — not only denied its chance of taking the top spot but might cause some problems as the tournament progresses.

Mahesh scored eight points for Bengal and Sandeep Narwal 11 for Patna. Bengal gained five points and has to wait for the result of the next match between Pune and Vizag to see if it can go one place up from last.

The result: Bengal Warriors 30 (Mahesh 8) bt Patna Pirates 28 (Sandeep Narwal 11).
