September 06, 2012 01:04 am | Updated 01:04 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The Sri Lankan men’s and women’s teams have pulled out of the 52nd South Zone senior basketball championship which commenced here on Wednesday.

“They said they would not be able to come to India in the wake of attacks on Sri Lankans in Tamil Nadu,” R. Sridhar Reddy, organising secretary of the tournament, told The Hindu .

“We were hoping that they would somehow make it. We had even organised for transport at the Chennai airport to bring them to Hyderabad, giving all assurances regarding their safety,” said Sridhar.

“But, we were told this evening that they had to pull out as per the general guidelines issued by the Sri Lankan High Commission in India in the wake of some incidents in Tamil Nadu,” added Sridhar.
