In the ongoing battle between G. Jwala and the Badminton Association of India, Sports Minister Jitendra Singh has responded positively to Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily’s letter to him, seeking the former’s intervention to resolve the issue. “A player of her (Jwala’s) stature and reputation, who is a pride of our nation, is being treated in an unfair manner by the BAI over an apparent trivial issue.
“I have had a detailed discussion with the player herself and from the facts of the events that have transpired, it appears that the player is being treated unfairly,” Moily had written in a strongly worded letter to Jitendra Singh, requesting him to “intervene and resolve the issue amicably.”
Moily had also issued a veiled threat, saying: “I may also like to mention that if the impasse continues for long — which ultimately brings the sport and sportspersons to disrepute — the Petroleum sector may have to reconsider its various forms of support to BAI.”
In his response, Jitendra Singh said he had asked his department to look into the matter and take quick action.
“Jwala met me and apprised me. As far as my Ministry is concerned, all the necessary assistance has been extended to her from time to time. She has been included as a core probable of the Indian team for the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games to be held in 2014. For this purpose, she has been included for the National coaching camp at Lucknow. Hence the interest of the player is being adequately taken care of by my Ministry.”
