Union Sports Minister Jitendra Singh has expressed concern about the preparation of the Indian athletes for the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, scheduled to be held next year.
At a meeting held on Monday, the Minister asked the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to review the preparations, even as he noted that India would stand to lose grip over 30 per cent of the medals that it had won in the last edition at home, owing to the exclusion of archery, tennis, Greco-Roman wrestling and pairs events in shooting.
Stating his disappointment about many of the national sports federations not making plans for training of probable medal winners, the Minister wanted a panel of coaches headed by a chief coach in each discipline, apart from a steering committee to monitor the training on a weekly basis.
The Asian Games, without indoor games like chess and cue sports, will be held in Incheon, Korea, from June 29 to July 6, while the CWG will be staged in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 3.
