The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has entrusted the task of hosting the fourth South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) qualification men’s basketball championship to the Basketball Federation of India (BFI).
The qualifying event for the 28th FIBA Asia championship, featuring Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka, apart from host India, will be staged at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium, Bengaluru, from July 3 to 5.
The qualifying event was originally allotted to Bangladesh, but the FIBA has asked the BFI to conduct the same at a short notice. The event was held in Kathmandu last year.
The BFI has decided to go ahead with the original selection of 25 probables made during the last National championship at Bhilwara, Rajasthan, in January.
The probables have been called for a selection trial at Bengaluru on June 13 and 14. The list will be pruned to 16, and the team will have a camp to prepare for the SABA championship.
Meanwhile, the BFI will chalk out its plans for the women’s squad, and the under-16 teams in due course of time.
