Young Soumyajit Ghosh of Petroleum continued his dominance in men’s table tennis, winning both the senior and youth titles in the DCPL National-ranking East Zone table tennis tournament at SAI Indoor Hall, Bolpur on Thursday.

It was also a bad day for the reigning men’s and women’s National champions, who lost to younger opponents.

Soumyajit overcame a deficit at the start (1-2) to beat Petroleum colleague and National champion Anthony Amalraj (4-2) in the men’s final.

By doing so, Soumyajit also kept his record intact against Amalraj, whom he had beaten in the men’s semifinals before winning the inter-institutional title earlier in the season.

Soumyajit beat his India teammate Harmeet Desai in the youth boys’ final to complete his double. The women’s section also saw a reversal of fortunes as Pooja Sahasrabudhe of Petroleum won the title making a spectacular comeback against National champion Poulomi Ghatak. Sutirtha Mukherjee of West Bengal was the most prominent performer in the age-group category, where she annexed a double crown — the youth and junior girls’ titles.
