Soniya picks up 48kg gold

February 23, 2011 12:08 am | Updated 12:08 am IST - RANCHI:

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Atom Sandhya Rani Devi was forced to eat the humble pie in the women's 48kg weightlifting event at Jamshedpur on Tuesday.

Sandhya, representing the host Jharkhand, was pushed to the bronze place by Sanjita Chanu of Manipur who finished second behind favourite and CWG silver medallist Ng. Soniya Chanu.

Soniya snatched 68kg, clean and jerked 89 for a total of 157 to take the gold medal.

This effort fell far short of her CWG performance. Sanjita's total lift of 154 was three kg more than Sandhya's total which earned her the silver medal.
