Sodhi shoots World record again

March 07, 2010 09:57 pm | Updated 09:57 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Ronjan Sodhi shot a World record-equalling 147 out of 150 in double trap in the shotgun World Cup at Acapulco, Mexico, on Saturday, but was not eligible to make the finals as he was competing in the MQS category.

Sodhi had rounds of 49, 50 and 48 as he equalled the World record for the second time. He had shot two World records 147 and 194 on way to the gold in the World Cup in Belgrade in 2008.

He had also shot a 194 on way to the silver in the World Cup at Minsk last year, but Chinese Xu Binyuan made a new World record at 196 then.

Owing to his below par fare during the last National Championship and the selection trials, Sodhi could not gain entry into the main team for the first two World Cups and had been given the choice of competing in the MQS category along with Himanshu, who shot 137 in Mexico.

Vikram Bhatnagar did very well to make the final, with a 140, following rounds of 48, 47 and 45. He won the shoot off along with Wang Nan of China in making the final. Bhatnagar made 46 in the final to take the fourth place with a total of 186.

Ajay Mittal had also shot 140 with rounds of 49, 45 and 46, but was the one to lose the shoot off for a berth in the final, and settled for the seventh place in a field of 22.

Joshua Richmond of the USA won the gold with a total of 192, while Hakan Dahlby of Sweden beat another American Jeffrey Holguin 22-21 in a long-drawn tie-shoot to bag the silver after the two had ended up with a total of 191.

The results: Men: Double trap: 1. Joshua Richmond (USA) 192 (144); 2. Hakan Dahlby (Swe) 191(22) 144; 3. Jeffrey Holguin (USA) 191(21) 141; 4. Vikram Bhatnagar 186 (140) 1; 7. Ajay Mittal 140(0); 10. Mohammed Ashab 137. MQS: Ronjan Sodhi 147; Himanshu 137.
