Sindhu breezes past Thu Huyen

P.V. Sindhu, the favourite to lift the women's singles crown in the US$ 15,000 Tata Open India International Challenge following the no-show of top seed Eriko Hirose of Japan, eased into the second round with an easy victory at the NSCI courts on Thursday.

The 16-year-old Andhra girl thrashed Thu Huyen Le 21-11, 21-10 in less than half an hour.

There was an upset in the women's singles when unheralded Mudra Dhainje ousted fifth seed Claudia Mayer of Austria 21-14, 21-16.

Among those entering the pre-quarterfinals along with Sindhu and Neha, who got past Indonesian qualifier I.W. Millicent 22-20, 21-17, were defending champion and seventh seed P.C. Thulasi, 4th seed Arundhati Pantawane, 6th seed Aditi Mutatkar, 8th seed Sayali Gokhale, all from India, and third seed Chan TszKa of Hong Kong.

Top seeded Alamsyah Yunus of Indonesia led the remaining men's seeds into the last 16 of the singles event with a 21-14, 21-18 first-round demolition of India's B. Sai Praneeth.
