Simarjeet Singh edged out overnight leader Viraj Madappa from Kolkata by one stroke to emerge the champion of the Tata Steel Tamil Nadu Amateurs’ champion at the par-72 Coimbatore Golf Club course here on Friday.

Simarjeet carded a one-over 73 and completed his engagements with a 13-over 301 for the title.

The veteran, who last won the amateur tour a decade ago at this course, took charge on the back nine.

This put pressure on Viraj, who started well with an even-par 36 in the front nine. But costly mistakes on the on the return marred his otherwise good show.

Simarjeet, meanwhile, shot in three birdies in four holes. Despite a bogey-five on the 18th, the back nine of one-under par 35 sealed the deal for him.

“I am happy to have won on the tour after a long time. I hope this win will trigger positive results in the future,” said Simarjeet.
