Shooting: Harveen shines in selection trials

Harveen Srao beat Albha Oberoi by 4.3 points in the selection trials for air pistol at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, Tughlakabad, here on Thursday.

In the absence of Olympian Heena Sidhu, National record holder Harveen asserted herself with a total of 199.6 in the final.

Malaika Goel, who topped the qualifiers with 383, was sixth. Despite a 7.9 on the third shot in the final, Shweta finished third. Devyani Singh Rathore moved to the fourth place, ahead of Anisa Sayyed who had topped in sports pistol.

In the men’s free rifle 3-position event, Olympian Sanjeev Rajput overwhelmed Chain Singh by 9.9 points with a total of 450.8.

In the final, Satyendra Singh had trouble with the target as one shot of his registered 3.1, and was the first to be eliminated. R. Abemo Kikon, Ravi Kumar,

Surendra Singh Rathod, Kapil Rana and Imran Hasan Khan were placed third to seventh in that order. In the centre fire pistol, Samaresh Jung pipped Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar after both had shot 582.

Commonwealth Games triple gold medallist Omkar Singh was placed third on 581, one point ahead of Gurpreet Singh and Pemba Tamang.

In the junior men’s sports pistol, Manpreet Singh topped with 576, eight points ahead of Ajitesh Kaushal.
