India’s Sharwan Kharb won the men’s 10,000m silver on the second day of the 16th Asian junior athletics championship in Taipei City on Friday. Sharwan clocked 31 minutes 52.37 seconds to finish ahead of Yaser Salem Bagharab (32:22.42) of Yemen who ran barefoot.
Hazuma Hattori of Japan won the gold with a timing of 31 minutes 10.60 seconds.
Shakti Solanki won the men’s shot put bronze with a final throw of 17.09m. Shahib Mehrdelan (18.85) and Shahin Jafari (18.64) won the gold and silver for Iran.
Meghana Shetty clocked 14.31 seconds to top her race in women’s 100m hurdles. Her time was second best to Mako Fukube who won her race at 14.13 seconds, triggering hopes of a medal in the final scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Pinki Kumari clocked 4:37.53 to place fifth in women’s 1,500m that was won by Song Mi O of Korea at 4:28.38.
In men’s 10,000m walk, Karan Rathi placed fifth among eight with a time of 49:30.54. Fumitaka Oikawa of Japan won the race at 44:08.25.
Sharmila Kumari was sixth among nine in women’s javelin with a throw of 46.36m. She was more than four metres away from a medal as Chu Chang of Chinese Taipei took the bronze at 50.45m. Shiori Touma of Japan (55.75m) won gold ahead of Qi-Yan Kang of China (51.97m).
After two days of competition, India is ninth in the medals table, with one silver and two bronze medals, while China and Japan are on top with six gold medals each.
