India’s Vikas Gowda finished sixth in men’s discus with a throw of 61.97m which came in his last effort at the Shanghai Diamond League meet on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Indianhas a season best of 65.82m which came at Mesa in the US in early April. Piotr Malachowski of Poland won the gold with an effort of 67.34m.

Meanwhile, Tintu Luka opened her season with a ninth place. The 24-year-old, who is coached by P.T. Usha, came up with a slower than expected 2:03.61s in the 800m which had some of the world’s best runners. It was a slow race and Burundi’s 20-year-old Francine Niyonsaba, who was seventh in the London Olympics last year, won the gold in this season’s world-leading time of 2:00.33s while the seasoned former World champion Janeth Jepkosgei (2:01.28) and Morocco’s Malika Akkaoui (2:01.49) took the next two spots.

In other events, Caterine Ibarguen of Columbia won the women’s triple jump in a world-leading 14.69m while China’s Li Jinzhe, a former Asian champion, took the men’s long jump with a season-topping effort of 8.34m. It was nine centimetres better than his personal best.
