Seema Tomar tackled windy conditions well to shoot 66 out of 75 to be placed 12th in women’s trap in the shotgun World Cup in Acapulco, Mexico, on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Seema, who had shot a silver medal in the World Cup in Dorset in 2010, had rounds of 23, 21 and 22, as she missed the final by three points.

National champion Shreyasi Singh shot 63 following rounds of 20, 21, and 22 in placing 19th while Varsha Varman shot 58 to take the penultimate spot in a field of 23.

Shooting in the MQS section, Olympian Shagun Chowdhary had a total of 61, as her fortunes kept changing with rounds of 23, 18 and 20.

Liudmila Pshenkanikov of Russia beat the reigning Olympic champion and two-time World champion Jessica Rossi of Italy 12-9 in the duel for the gold, in the new format. Both had shot 13 out of 15 in the semifinals to earn the right to fight for the gold.

Silvano Stanco of Italy beat Jana Beckmann of Germany 13-10 in the duel for bronze, after both had shot 12 in the semifinals. The German had topped the qualifiers list with Miranda Wilder of the US with a total of 73 out of 75, but both had failed to fetch a medal, as the shooters started with a clean slate in the semifinals, and those scores were also nullified later in the fight for the medals.

Miranda and Rachael Lynn of the US settled for the fifth and sixth places after the semifinals, in which they shot 11 and 9 respectively.

In men’s trap, Anirudh Singh was 14th in a field of 39 after two rounds, with a total of 47. Zoravar Sandhu (44) and Manavjit Singh Sandhu (44) were placed 27th and 29th respectively, with three more rounds left before the knock-out final.

The results: Women’s trap: 1. Liudmila Pshenkanikov (Rus) 12 (13) 70; 2. Jessical Rossi (Ita) 9 (13) 71; 3. Silvana Stanco (Ita) 13 (12) 69; 12. Seema Tomar 64; 19. Shreyasi Singh 63; 22. Varsha Varman 58. MQS: Shagun Chowdhary 61.
