Sutharitha Mukherjee of West Bengal capped a superb run in the junior girls’ category with a title triumph on the penultimate day of the Indian Oil Servo National ranking South Zone table tennis championship at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor stadium here on Saturday.
Suthirtha downed India No. 2 Karnam Spoorthy of Airports Authority of India (AAI) 11-5, 11-3, 11-7, 11-5 in less than 25 minutes.
Spoorthy tried being aggressive but just could not find her length and control against the fluent Suthirtha.
The 14-year-old from West Bengal, National sub junior champion last year, scalped top seed Reeth Rishya of PSPA 4-1 in the quarterfinals and fourth seeded Mallika Bhandarkar (AI) in the semifinals.
The unseeded Sabhay Veermani of Delhi overcame initial resistance from Tamil Nadu’s K.R. Rohith, also unseeded, to lift the junior boys’ crown.
Sabhay earned Rs. 16,500 while Rohith had to be content with Rs. 8200. Suthirtha claimed Rs. 13,200 with Spoorthy pocketing Rs. 6,600.
