July 05, 2014 01:10 am | Updated November 16, 2021 05:38 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Leela Sagar of Hyderabad, with three wins and a second-place finish in the Optimist class, stole the limelight on the fourth day of the Deloitte Monsoon Regatta sailing championship here on Friday.

The young lad from Udbhav School, Rasoolpura, who began sailing only two years ago, outclassed his more experienced rivals — sometimes with leads of more than 30 boat lengths — with a fine display of sailing skills.

The trainee of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad (YCH) had finished fourth in the last nationals at Pune. If Sagar wins the title, it will be the first gold medal for Hyderabad after a very long time, and the first gold for students of the YCH at the National level.

Vishal Singh of Pune registered one win is currently lying second with 12 points.

The results:

Optimist class: 1. Leela Sagar (5 penalty points) 2. Vishal Singh (12), 3. R. Neelanand (20).

IndOpti: 1. Y. Prasad (10), 2. Bharat Kumar (11), 3. M. Saibaba (13).
