Mahesh Ramachandran led Team Goa to the gold in the Omega Class championship on the third day of the Deloitte Monsoon Regatta at the Hussainsagar lake here on Thursday.

Goa held on to the narrow lead it had established over its nearest rival Chennai on Wednesday to lift the trophy.

The winds were conducive for lightweight sailors and a few keen contests were witnessed for lesser positions.

However the leaders were not challenged. Chennai, led by young Abhimanyu Panwar, finished second in the Omega class, followed by Saif Shaikh-led team Hyderabad.

Dheer on top

In the Topper Class nationals, Dheer Singhi of Chennai raced away to the gold.

Last year’s champion Vishnu Sujeesh, who also hails from Chennai, had to be content with the silver while Hyderabad youngster Rajnikanth Ragi took the bronze. He had won the bronze last year too.

Another participant from Hyderabad, Ananya Chauhan, a promising young school student, was declared the best girl sailor.

The results: Omega Class: 1. Goa; 2. Chennai; 3. Hyderabad.

Topper Class: 1. Dheer Singhi; 2. Vishnu Sujeesh; 3. Rajnikanth Ragi.

Other awards: Best in silver fleet: Nikhil Kumar; Best young sailor: Aman Hirani; Best girl sailor: Ananya Chauhan.
