With the Management Committee of the World Squash Federation reporting that no new nominations have been filed for the next set of office-bearers, the decks have been cleared for N. Ramachandran to start a fresh term as President.
Instead of a two-year term as now, it will be a four-year term for Ramachandran and his team, in accordance with the new regulations approved by the Federation’s General Body.
Ramachandran will formally resume his new term when the General Body meets in September.
“Except for one new member, as Vice-President in the wake of Chris Stahl’s stepping down, the rest of the team remains the same — a unanimous vote,” he said.
Crucial time
The fresh term comes at a crucial time when squash community the world over are keenly looking at the prospects of the sport getting a nod for the 2020 Olympics.
Ramachandran said he saw in the ‘unanimous mandate’ a stamp of approval from the members of all the affiliate countries that the present team has been doing well in furthering the cause of squash in the eyes of the IOC.
“There are testing times still ahead,” he said, before the executive board of IOC next year takes a final decision on which core sport in the current Olympic programme would give way to a new one.
Apart from squash the other sports eyeing that single slot are baseball, karate, roller sports, softball, sports climbing, wakeboard and wushu.
