Railways wins maiden title

Railways won its maiden title downing Services 35-34 in the final of the 41st senior National men’s handball championship at the St. Thomas School ground here on Thursday.

In an exciting final, Railways kept its cool and got the match winner in the dying seconds. It was Salman Khan’s goal scoring ability that tilted the balance in favour of the winner.

Shamsher Singh of Railways was adjudged the man of the match and Amit Lamba of Services was declared the best goalkeeper of the meet.

Delhi defeated last year’s champion Chhattisgarh 28-26 to take the third place. Punjab beat Haryana to occupy fifth place and Bengal edged past Jharkhand 22-20 to snatch the sixth place.

Jharkhand ended seventh and Haryana was eighth.

All eight teams qualified for the next National Games in Kerala and also the Federation Cup.

Handball Federation of India vice-president Anandeshwar Pandey distributed the trophies.

The results: Final: Railways bt Services 35-34. Third place: Delhi bt Chhattigarh 28-26.
