Punjab beats Railways

Jagdeep Singh relied on experience, and in tandem with the young Amritpal Singh Jr. and Amjot Singh, lifted Punjab men to a 92-81 victory over Indian Railways in a closely-fought league tie of the seventh all-India Savio Cup-Don Bosco basketball tournament at the Don Bosco court, Matunga, here on Thursday.

Earlier, Geetu Anna Jose was unstoppable in Southern Railway's 72-61 win over South East Central Railway in the women's league.

Amritpal, Amjot, and Jagdep scored 22 points each for Punjab. Prakash Mishra (25) and Gagandeep Singh (22) were on target for Railways, which kept pace in the first two quarters before losing the way in the face of pacy attacks by its rivals.

The results:

League: Men: Punjab 92 (Amritpal Singh Jr. 22, Amjot Singh 22, Jagdeep Singh 22) bt Railways 81 (Prakash Mishra 25, Gagandeep Singh 22, Sunil 16).

Women: Southern Railway 72 (Geetu Anna Jose 35, P. Anita 22, S. Kokila 8) bt Chhattisgarh 61 (Pushpa M 27).
