Pratik and Anjana triumph

Pratik Patil pipped K.G. Chaithanyaa on the Buchholz score after being tied on 6.5 points from nine rounds in the under-17 open event of the eighth Asian Schools chess championship that concluded here on Wednesday. Pratik had also won the blitz event while Ram Gupta won the rapid event in the under-17 open category.

Anjana Krishna won the girls under-17 title with a two-point margin over Myrzagul Sydykova of Kyrgyzstan and compatriot Akshaya Nandakumar. She had also won the rapid and blitz titles, at the expense of the girl from Kyrgyzstan.

In the absence of World champion V. Anand and the Union Sports Minister Jitendra Singh, who were originally scheduled to give the prizes, Grandmasters K. Sasikiran and Parimarjan Negi, among others, took turns to present the medals for the players.
