Pirelli is set to introduce tyres with Kevlar belts instead of steel for Sunday’s German Grand Prix, in the wake of the Silverstone fiasco, The Daily Telegraph reported.
The English paper said on Tuesday that the change was originally to come earlier in the season, but was blocked by some teams. It said that Pirelli plans to use its modified 2012 tyres, which also have Kevlar belts, from the Hungarian race on July 28 onwards.
Pirelli was expected to make an according statement later on in Tuesday.
Sunday’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone saw several blow-outs, including the left rear tyres of Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa, Jean-Eric Vergne, and Sergio Perez.
The dangerous incidents prompted calls for immediate action. The FIA on Monday gave the green light for in-season tyre testing, and using an upcoming young driver for tyre testing with 2013 cars.
The ruling body also said that future changes to tyres can be made without the unanimous consent of teams to “allow the FIA to take all necessary actions to ensure safety.”
