Phelps tunes up for trials

US Olympic swimming great Michael Phelps won the 100m butterfly and lost the 100m free on Friday in his final meeting before the U.S. Olympic swimming trials later this month.

Phelps, whose 14 Olympic gold medals include an unprecedented eight in one Games at Beijing four years ago, settled for second behind Jimmy Feigin in the 100m freestyle, Phelps clocking 49.05sec to Feigin's 48.63.

Phelps said he used that setback to fuel his bid in the 100m butterfly, in which he powered to a comfortable victory in 52.02.

The meeting, organised by the by the University of Texas aquatics department, is opposite the USA Swimming Grand Prix event of the season, in Santa Clara, California.

Phelps opted not to make the trip to California, instead using the Texas meeting as his last prep races for the Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska, starting on June 25.
