Petroleum will look to extend its supremacy in the 39th all-India inter-institutional table tennis, which gets underway here at the Paljor indoor gymnasium hall on Tuesday.

The picturesque venue situated a little off Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is hosting a major national table tennis event for the first time.

Almost all the major names of the country will be seen in action representing different units in the team event, which will be followed by the individual events. The individual events are open to state participation and that virtually makes it another national event.

There will be one prominent absentee: the National men’s champion Achanta Sharath Kamal because of his commitments abroad. His absence will definitely reduce some of Petroleum’s might in the men’s section and Railways, the perennial runner-up, would be looking to exploit its traditional opponent’s apparent weakness.

The Petroleum roster is otherwise formidable with former national champion Subhajit Saha, Soumyadeep Roy, A. Amal Raj, Devesh Karia and Aniket Koparkar present in the line-up. Railways has Anirban Nandi, Aman Balgu, Soumyajit Sarkar, Omkar Torgalkar and Arpit Bhopalkar.

In the women’s section National champion K. Shamini leads the list with former champion Poulami Ghatak, Madhurika Patkar, Neha Agarwal, Pooja Sahasradudhe also figuring in the list. The Railways has the likes of Anindita Chakraborty, Prajakta Tipale and Mansi Bhagwat among others.
