Polish two-time Olympic weightlifting champion Waldemar Baszanowski died on Friday at the age of 75 in Warsaw after prolonged illness, weightlifting association officials said.

Baszanowski won the lightweight Olympic gold in 1964 and 1968, was a five-time world champion and six-time European champion. He set 25 world records, was elected to the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame in 1993 and named the third greatest weightlifter of all-time by the professional quarterly World Weightlifting, after Turk Naim Suleymanoglu and Hungarian Imre Foeldim.

Baszanowski was elected president of the European Weightlifting Federation in 1999, and also served as a coach in both Poland and abroad after finishing his career.
