Nanno Singh of SSCB came back strongly to outclass Purohit Ravi of Gujarat 30-11 in the men’s boxing light fly class (46-49kg) of the 35th National Games at the TSGA Indoor Stadium here on Sunday.

Purohit looked a shade better in the first round. But, Nanno gauged the situation for sometime before delivering the big blows.

After a hue and cry over the use of the Indian ring for the competition, the players and coaches can now heave a sigh of relief as the international rings from Germany finally arrived. “We will have the new rings in place from Monday,” assured Asit Banerjee, director of the boxing competition.

Asit had said that the Indian ring used here was internationally approved and among the best. So, the change in ring came as a pleasant surprise.

IOA VP unhappy

IOA vice-president Tarlochan Singh, who was at the venue to supervise the proceedings, was quite unhappy with the absence of elite players. “If they have failed to represent their State, they should be penalised,” he said.

He also blamed it on the clash of dates with Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) camp. “It has happened not just in boxing, but in other disciplines, too. SAI should not have such camps when the National Games is on,” he said.

Tarlochan also pointed out that there are several teams fielding players from other States. “There should be some restriction. Every State must field its own player.”

He plans on bringing it to the notice of the IOA president for the benefit of the Games.
