City-based Nalanda Vidya Niketan's Class IX student Aravind Kumar will be taking part in the world karate championship, which will be held at Tokyo (Japan) from August 6.
He is part of the 12-member Indian team and this tournament is organised by The World Shotokan Karate-do Federation.
“As many as 96 countries are affiliated to the federation and karatekas from 40 countries are taking part in this event,” said A. Vijaya Kumar, coach of Aravind.
Incidentally, both the coach and his ward took part in a competition held at Sri Lanka recently and bagged medals.
“Aravind won two bronze medals in junior boys' ‘kata and kumite' categories while Vijaya Kumar secured gold medal in the ‘kata' division of the veterans' segment,” said A. Vijaya Babu, Nalanda Educational Institutions' chief.
He congratulated Aravind on his selection and wished him all the best.
“Extracurricular activities such as sports and games will help students develop all-round personality. Aravind's exploits will inspire many youngsters in taking up martial arts,” he added.
School principal M. Padmaja, general manager V.S. Praveen Kumar, and manager (HR) M. Venkateswara Rao were present.
