Mithra Varun hogs the limelight at Coimbatore sports meet

Six records took a tumble on the second day of the State-level Republic Day sports meet at the Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.

Of the six records that fell today, four came in the boys’ section. But, the most impressive of them all turned out to be S. Mithra Varun of Coimbatore. The class XI student of Mani HSS heaved the discus to a new distance of 43.96m in the under-19 boys’ section.

It surpassed the previous best of 42.57m set by Anneclato Njordman of Campion HSS, Tiruchi, at Nagercoil in 1982.

Record throw

Varun, the last two years’ champion, opened with 37m and finished the day with a record throw in his final attempt.

Other record breakers

R. Naveen (Chethana HSS, Madurai, U-17 400m), A. Dharun (Century Foundation, Tirupur, U-19 400m), R. Logeshwaran (NLC Boys HSS, U-17 400m), L. Samya Sri (CMS MHSS, Cbe U-17 800m) and R. Nithya (Govt. Girls HSS, Erode, U-17 100m hurdles) were the other record breakers of the day.
