February 14, 2013 01:49 am | Updated June 13, 2016 05:48 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Union Sports Ministry has decided to take up the matter of ensuring the retention of wrestling in the Olympics in 2020. The Ministry stated that it would pursue the matter with countries like Russia, Iran, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Japan and China, where wrestling was popular.

“The Ministry will take up the issue with IOC to reconsider its decision and retain wrestling in the category of core sports in the Olympic Games,” said a release on Wednesday.

The Ministry hoped that the IOC Executive Board meeting at St. Petersburg in May and the IOC Session at Buenos Aires (Argentina) later would retain wrestling in the Olympics.
