Ministry asks States to enforce Sports Code

November 19, 2014 02:46 am | Updated 02:46 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Union Sports Ministry has urged the State and Union Territory Governments to take immediate steps to promote good governance and transparency in the functioning of state and district-level associations by issuing suitable instructions or framing appropriate legislations.

In a recent letter to Chief Secretaries of all States, Sports Secretary Ajit M. Sharan said that since the National Sports Development Code has been upheld by the Delhi High Court following a case, its provisions, including restrictions on age and tenure of the office-bearers of sports bodies, “are binding on all National level federations”.

“Since sports is a State subject, suitable instructions/ law needs to be promulgated by the State Governments as well to enforce the provisions of the Sports Code in order to bring about good governance and transparency in the functioning of all the state and district-level associations,” said a release on Tuesday.
