India’s pride and joy, M.C. Mary Kom was on Sunday assured of a medal in women’s boxing of the XXI Commonwealth Games as she made her way into the semifinals of the 48kg category at the Oxenford Studio here.
The five-time World champion, hungry for her first Games medal, had her opponent Megan Gordon (Scotland) scurrying for cover with an all-out attack and was never in trouble before earning a points decision.
Vikas Krishan also moved up to the quarterfinal of the men’s 75kg with a decisive points win over Australian Campbell Somerville. However, India’s luck ran out in the women’s 69kg when Lovina Borgohain lost to England’s Sandy Ryan on a split decision.
In gymnastics, none of the two Indians impressed. Pranati Nayak, figuring in the women’s vault final, finished eighth and last with a score of 11.983. Pranati was penalised 0.100 for landing outside the line on her first attempt and she could not make a safe landing in her second.
In men’s rings, Rajesh Patra was hardly in contention before finishing eighth with a score of 12.933. Indian cyclists and swimmers were simply outclassed by their rivals.
