Maiden National title for Manpreet Kaur

January 11, 2013 12:42 am | Updated 12:42 am IST - MODINAGAR (UTTAR PRADESH):

Manpreet Kaur of All India Police rode on her clean and jerk performance to claim the women’s +75kg gold medal on the concluding day of the National weightlifting championship at the SRM University campus here on Thursday.

This was the maiden National title for the 23-year-old, who lifted an overall 189kg. Binitha Devi took the second place with 187kg, while Amanpreet Kaur overcame a sore back to finish at the third spot with 185kg.

In the men’s +105kg division, Himanshu Kumar Chang of Railways banked on his fine showing in the snatch competition to bag the top honour with a total of 346kg. Former champion Sandeep Kumar of Services did 328kg to grab the silver medal ahead of Pardeep Kumar, who managed 327kg.

Manpreet, champion at the AIP meet last month, lost the battle to Binitha in snatch by one kg after lifting 85kg on her last attempt. However, the Punjab-based lifter adopted an aggressive approach in clean and jerk and hoisted 104kg on her last attempt to secure the gold.

“The competition was tough, but I knew that I could pull it off,” said Manpreet.

Cautious beginning

Chang exhibited his confidence in snatch and outclassed his opponents by lifting 154kg on his second attempt. He started cautiously in clean and jerk to achieve 192kg. The Railwayman, however, failed in his bid to cross the total of 350kg as he faltered at 201kg and left the platform in utter disappointment. Second-placed Sandeep had the consolation of surpassing Chang in clean and jerk with an effort of 193kg.

Pardeep Kumar, who was tied with Sanjeev Nehra of Uttar Pradesh at 327kg, took the third position on lower body weight.

Services claimed the men’s team championship, while Railways was runner-up. Chandrakant Mali, who created three National records in the 94kg competition, was adjudged best lifter among men. Railways bagged the team title in the women’s section, while Punjab finished second. Ng. Soniya Chanu, the 48kg champion, was declared best female lifter.
