Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu keep titles

Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu retained the men and women’s titles in the S.P. Sampathy memorial 43rd senior National and inter-State carrom championships here on Tuesday. Petroleum Sports Promotion Board won the men and women’s crowns in the inter-institution event. Maharashtra beat Tamil Nadu 3-0 in the men’s final and Vidarbha came third beating Karnataka.

Tamili Nadu defeated Bihar 2-1 to take the women’s title. Maharashtra was third after beating Chandigarh 2-1. (On Monday, the organisers in a press release wrongly informed that Maharashtra lost to Assam in the quarterfinals).

In the inter-institution event, PSPB men beat Jain Irrigation 3-0 in the final. PSPB blanked LIC 3-0 in the women’s final.

The results: Semifinals: National and inter-State: Men: Maharashtra bt Vidarbha 3-0 (Anil Munde bt Irshad Ahmed 25-10, 8-23, 25-8; Vilas Dalvi bt Yogesh 25-12, 15-9; Ganesh Taware and Ravi Waghmare bt Moreshwar and Nikhil 5-25, 20-14, 20-5).

Tamil Nadu bt Karnataka 2-1 (B. Radhakrishnan bt J. Shankar 25-1, 25-0; Bharatidasan bt Zaheer Pasha 25-17, 23-4; S. Dinakaran and Shaktivel lost to M. Vinod and Saleem Pasha 11-25, 5-25).

Women: Bihar bt Maharashtra 2-1 (Kushbu Rani bt Sneha More 16-17, 25-5, 20-17; Sandhya Sinha bt Urmila Shendge 23-10, 23-12; Vibha Kumari and Archana Kumari lost to Minal Lele and Nilam Ghotke 10-19, 21-14, 1-25).

Tamil Nadu bt Chandigarh 2-1 (G. Revathy lost to Tyba 21-25, 11-12; A. Ponnarasi bt Farhin 25-5, 25-19; Tamil Nadu got walk over in the doubles).

Inter-institution: Men: PSPB bt AISESCB 3-0 (K. Srinivas bt Suhas Pomendkar 25-0, 25-2; Yogesh Pardesi bt S. Narasinga Rao 25-7, 25-0; K. Ramesh Babu and Ashok Gaur bt Ananth Gayatri and K. Chinna Raj 15-14, 25-11).

Jain Irrigation bt RBI 2-1 (Pankaj Pawar bt V.S.K. Naidu 25-5, 25-6; Md. Sajid lost to V. Akash 7-25, 17-25; Prashant More and Rahim Khan bt H.K. Umesh and Abdul Sagir 21-19, 16-25, 25-4).

Women: LIC bt CAG 3-0 (S. Apoorva bt D. Swarnalatha 25-3, 25-14; P. Nirmala bt Rashmi Ranjan 24-8, 25-0; Shilpa Palnikar and Deepika Sinha bt Rinky Ranjan and Sunit Dingre 25-11, 25-0).

PSPB bt RBI 3-0 (S. Ilavazhaki bt Shobhawati Kumari 25-2, 25-4; Rashmi Kumari bt Kavita Somanchi 25-18, 25-9; Khushboo and Kajal bt R. Saritha and Subhada Nagaokar 25-4, 25-0).
