Karnataka Bulls overcomes Yanam Tigers in see-saw battle
Kerala Killers staged a splendid rally to beat Maratha Warriors in five sets and Karnataka Bulls downed Yanam Tigers, also in five sets, in the Indian Volley League at the Dr. YSR International Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday.
Maratha Warriors' attacker Omvir Mann continued his great form and Kerala Killers was unable to contain him. Omvir, along with captain G. Pradeep, was responsible for Maratha Warriors going 2-0 up in spite of Killers trying to contain the powerful spiking of the southpaw Omvir.
Even as Omvir spiked hard and got points to bring his team back into the game often in the remaining sets, the Killers improved its reception and the team rallied. The Warriors felt the absence of T. Aziz, out with a sprained ankle.
The Tigers stepped into the court with a lot of confidence, having beaten the Bulls at Bangalore and Chennai. It was off to a good start, winning the first set, which also witnessed Bulls' coach Om Prakash receiving a red card for his outburst against referee S. Ramamurthy when the score was at 19-14 in the Tigers' favour.
But lack of coordination saw the team failing at crucial stages. This, along with failure of its spikers, saw the Tigers lose the match which it should have won 3-0, according to its coach K. Muthukesavulu.
Captain and international P.S. Sreekanth was not at his best due to a muscle tear in his right arm, setter Tulasi was not fit and Ranjit Singh, who came in his place, was not experienced enough to handle pressure situations, like in the deciding fifth set.
Though attacker S.S. Ashok, the experienced Y. Subba Rao and universal Tom Jospeh struggled hard, the host lost in five sets.
Chennai Spikers prevailed over a fighting Hyderabad Chargers 25-19, 22-25, 29-27, 14-25, 15-11 in a match that lasted 113 minutes. Chennai has won all the three matches it played so far.
The win keeps Chennai Spikers on top of the table and overall standings at the end of the third day of the five-day Yanam leg.
