Jyothi and Deepika do well

The opening day of the world archery championship saw India’s Deepika Kumari (recurve) and V. Jyothi Surekha (compound) finishing among top 10 in the qualification round held at Belek Antalya in Turkey on Monday.

Deepika, the 19-year-old reigning junior world champion, totalled 1345 points over four distances – 70, 60, 50 and 30m – to occupy the 10th spot.

Shock finish

Dola Banerjee finished a shocking 49th with 1300 and Chekrovolu Swuro 71st with 1285.

The two poor scores pulled down India to the 12th position (3928) and is likely to play fifth-placed Japan in the first round of the team championship.

In the compound event, Jyothi finished sixth with 684 points while Trisha Deb was 15th with 680. Another veteran Jhano Hansdah was a distant 69 with 645.

The team totalled 2009 to take the 10th spot and will possibly meet the U.S. in the round of 16.

Delhi lad Abhishek Verma took the 31st spot with 698.

Rajat Chauhan was 46th with 693 and Sandeep Kumar 56th with 691.

The Indian team was placed 13th with 2082 points and is likely to draw France in the first round of team championship.

The Indian pair of Verma and Jyothi is placed 11th in the compound mixed team event and is expected to draw Denmark in the first round. The men’s recurve event will take place on Tuesday.
