Lasha Shavdatuashvili of Georgia on Sunday won a surprise men’s judo gold in the 66-kilogramme category at the London Olympics, while the women’s 52kg gold went to An Kum Ae of North Korea.

Shavdatuashvili defeated Hungarian Miklos Ungvari with a Yuko score, in the final of a competition full of upsets. The 20-year-old had reached the gold medal match with an ippon throw against Japanese world champion Masashi Ebinuma.

Ebinuma shared bronze with South Korean Cho Jun Ho, whom he beat in the quarter-finals when a jury overturned a ruling from judges that Cho had won the match.

An won the women’s gold medal against Yanet Bermoy Acosta of Cuba also thanks to a Yuko score, four years after getting silver in Beijing.

Priscilla Gneto of France and Rosalba Forciniti of Italy were awarded the bronze medals.
