Jayanta Talukdar wins bronze

September 20, 2010 02:04 am | Updated 02:04 am IST - KOLKATA:

India's Jayanta Talukdar won the bronze medal of the men's individual recurve for the first time in his third World Cup archery finals defeating Marco Galiazzo of Italy in the play-off at Edinburgh on Sunday. Talukdar won by six points to two.

The Indian, however, ran out of luck in the semifinals when he went down to top seed Brady Ellison of the U.S.A.

Talukdar led 5-1 at the end of the third set but the American roared back to take the next two and force the contest into tie-breaker.

In the one-arrow shoot-off, both shot a 9 each but Ellison's shot was found to be closer to the centre and was declared the winner.

Later Ellison won the gold medal defeating Im Dong-Hyun in the final.

Talukdar's victory over former world champion and one of the most celebrated archers in the world with maximum number of international medals, Michele Frangilli of Italy, gave the Indian the right boost before the semifinals.

Talukdar won the third and fourth set, the last one with full 30 points.

Early exit

On Saturday, India's Dola Banerjee and Deepika Kumari bowed out in the first round of the women's individual recurve section. Seeded third, Deepika lost to sixth seed Victoriya Koval of Ukraine by six points to four. Dola, who made it to the final owing to a Chinese archer's withdrawal, fell to second seed Justyna Mospinek of Poland by 6-0 point.

Deepika, who was leading by 4-2 at the end of the third set, was unlucky to loss the next two set by just one point.

The 17-year-old cadet world champion was competing in her first World Cup finals.
