Jamjang Deru gives India first medal

Jamjang Deru gave India its first medal in the world youth weightlifting championships, winning the silver in the 50 kg boys’ category at Tashkent on Monday.

Deru won the silver in clean and jerk with an effort of 110 kg and finished fourth in total lift with 195kg.

He lifted 85kg in snatch.

Deepak 12th

In the same category, Deepak Lather finished 12th with an effort of 174kg (80+94).

Chandrika seventh

In the girls’ 44 kg category, Chandrika Tarafdar took the seventh spot with 135kg (57+78) while Poonam Dalal was 15th with 122kg (53+69).

The world youth championship will serve as a qualification event for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
