Lewis Hamilton showed no signs of carrying over frustration from his disappointing Belgian Grand Prix by topping the timesheets from Jenson Button at Friday’s first practice for the Italian Grand Prix.

Mercedes driver Hamilton set the fastest lap time of 1 minute 26.187 seconds around the 5.793-kilometre Monza track, with his former team-mate Button 0.623 seconds behind in a McLaren.

Drivers’ championship leader Nico Rosberg was third, guiding his Mercedes round 0.808 seconds off the pace set by Hamilton.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, the only driver outwith the Mercedes pair to win races this season, had a low-key session to finish 16th.

Former world champions Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) and Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) were fourth and sixth respectively, either side of Kevin Magnussen (McLaren).

Second practice takes place later on Friday before final practice and qualifying on Saturday, and the race on Sunday.
