The International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and general secretary of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), six-time Olympian Randhir Singh joined hands with the group led by Abhay Singh Chautala, to ensure a speedy return of India into the Olympic Movement and in the larger interest of the athletes.
The suspended Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had its Special General Body meeting here on Sunday, and decided to forward its recommendations to its nine-member Ethics Commission, especially with regard to the contentious clause seeking to restrain the charge-framed officials from contesting the elections in the National Olympic Association.
Making it clear that some of the amendments to the IOA Constitution did not match the ones proposed by the IOC, in a stormy meeting, Randhir Singh said: “We are here for the sportspersons.”
The IOA has decided to negotiate the issue with the IOC in Lausanne in due course of time with the active support of Randhir Singh, towards revoking the suspension.
Proposal rejected
It was also noted that IOC’s proposal to uniformly apply the age and tenure clause on all the posts, and not just the three office-bearers — President, Secretary-General and Treasurer — was “regretfully” rejected.
The IOA had written to the IOC about its meeting, and got a response as well.
The IOC had reportedly decided that it would send its observers only for the IOA election, as and when it was held.
The IOA has to amend its Constitution and get it approved by the IOC before going ahead with its election.
