Sixteen teams from nine centres will take part in the third Inland Hobie 16 National sailing championship 2011, sponsored by Birla A1 Premium Cement, which will be conducted at the Hussainsagar Lake, here from July 15 to 18.
Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Brig. Prakash S. Nair, Commandant, Artillery Centre Hyderabad, and President of the Artillery Water Sports Association (AWSA), said the event has been seeing steady growth for the last couple of years and this year too, he expects a good turnout.
“At present, we have 16 teams, but we expect that the number may increase before the start of the regatta,” he said. AWSA will be the host and organiser of the event.
“All the leading sailors from top teams such as AYN (Mumbai), INTWC (Mumbai), INTWC (Visakhapatnam), IWSA (Pune), and local teams, EMESA and AWSA, will take part in the meet. He also introduced the media to the sailors and rowers who had won medals at National and international meets.
Maj. K.S. Panigrahy, Secretary and Treasurer, National Hobie Class Association (NHCA), said that NHCA will soon conduct an expedition from Chennai to Gopalpur-on-Sea in Orissa to popularise the Hobie class of boat among sailing enthusiasts.
