Indians dominate qualifying phase

September 30, 2011 11:43 pm | Updated 11:43 pm IST - Dehradun:

Results came on expected lines with India filling up 39 out of 48 spots spots in the main draw in four singles sections of the $10,000 ITTF Global junior circuit Indian Open table tennis championship here on Friday.

In keeping with the indications of an Indian domination following the sweep of team gold and silver medals on Thursday, the host challengers captured 12 out of 16 places each in the boys' and girls' main draws, seven out of eight in cadet boys' and all eight in the cadet girls' category.

No sweat

It was a no sweat for most of the seeds in the first stage league in all the sections.

The only exception was the surprise defeat of seventh seed Abhishek Yadav to Thailand's Peerapol Kunprasut, seeded nine, with the scoreline being 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9.

Since two players qualified from each four-player group, Yadav finished second to his Thai conqueror.

Among the junior girls, Chinese Taipei's Yeh Tung-Yi, Lee Chun-Hui and Thailand's Piyaporn Pannak and Areeya Sangpao played to their ranking and made the main draw to join the Indian brigade headed by Manika Batra.

An Indian sweep of medals appears a foregone conclusion in the cadet section. — Special Correspondent
