The Indian challenge in the women’s singles event in the table tennis competitions came to an end at the Scotstoun Sports Campus here on Thursday when Manika Batra lost to Ye Lin (Singapore) 11-4, 11-2, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7 in 34 minutes.
Earlier in the day, Manika had entered the quarters with a superb win over Canadian Anqi Luo. The Indian was twice in arrears before she held on to register an 11-13, 11-7, 8-11, 11-2, 11-7, 11-9 win over the Canadian.
However, it was ill-luck for K. Shamini and Madhurika Patkar who ran into tougher opponents. Shamini, up against Mengyu Yu (Singapore), lost 9-11, 11-5, 16-14, 11-4, 11-9 while Madhurika was forced out by Jian Fang Lay (Australia) but not before giving her opponent a stiff fight. Lay eventually won the tie at 11-8, 11-7, 10-12, 7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7.
However, Shamini and Madhurika did well in the doubles.
They defeated Hannah Lynch-Dawson and Emma Ludlow (Northern Ireland) and were joined in the pre-quarterfinals by Ankita Das and Poulomi Ghatak who defeated Aleena Edwards and Catherine Spicer (Trinidad and Tobago) quite easily.
In men’s doubles, the Indian pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj stormed into the semifinals beating the English pair of Sam Walker and Danny Reed.
