Indian badminton teams lose; mixed luck for paddlers

The Indian men's and women's badminton teams lost in the first round of the Asian Games here on Saturday.

The women, spearheaded by Saina Nehwal who won her match, went down 2-3 to Indonesia while the men lost 1-3 to Chinese Taipei.

Saina beat Adriyant Firdasari 21-16, 21-17 and the other win came through the doubles combination of G. Jwala and Ashwini Ponnappa who beat Greysia Polti and Meliana Jauhari 21-17, 17-21, 23-21.

However, Aditi Mutatkar lost to M.F. Kusumastuti 10-21, 16-21 while Aparna Balan and Prajakta Sawant were defeated 11-21, 11-21 by Lliyana and Nitya Maheswari. Arundhati Pantawane fell to Linda Wenifanetri 9-21, 10-21.

Indonesia went on to beat the fourth-seeded Chinese Taipei to make the semifinals along with China, Korea and Thailand.

The Indian men's team lost 1-3 to Chinese Taipei. P. Kashyap got the consolation, a 18-21, 21-13, 23-21 verdict against Hsuan Yi Hsueh.

Taipei, however, lost to Indonesia, which was joined by China and Thailand in the semifinals.

Srinivas eighth

In weightlifting, B. Srinivas Rao finished eighth with a total lift of 245 kg, following 135 in clean and jerk, in the men's 56-kg category. He was 40 kg behind the eventual gold medallist Wu Jingbao of China.

In the women's 48-kg section, Soniya Chanu and Sandyrani Devi finished fifth and sixth respectively with total lifts of 170 and 158. Wu Mingiuan of China walked away with the gold at 210 kg.

In table tennis, the Indian women won 3-0 against Lao PDR and lost 0-3 to Singapore. They still have a match against Maldives.

The Indian men lost 0-3 to Chinese Taipei and had a match to go against Vietnam in the three-member group.
