Indian archers hard at practise

July 26, 2012 12:21 am | Updated 12:21 am IST - LONDON:

The Indian archers, who will be the first to get a feel of the competition (even before the opening ceremony) with the ranking round, had a good outing for the first time in the main arena at the Lord's cricket ground here on Wednesday.

The coach of the Indian women's squad, Purnima Mahato, said that it was a good outing though it was a bit windy. “'The weather has improved very much in the last two days. After cold winds, rain and generally bad weather, it has been quite bright. We had a good session on the main field,”

The world No.1 woman archer, Deepika Kumari, had left India with a bout of cold and cough but has recovered good health and has been shooting well along with teammates Chekrovolu Swuro and Bombayla Devi. The Indians will have another training session on Thursday.

With the ranking rounds scheduled for Friday, the men's team competition on July 28 and the women's team competition on July 29, the Indian archers will not be part of the opening ceremony and focus on competition to give India a bright start.

Meanwhile, the Indian tennis squad was brimming with strength and confidence with the arrival of Leander Paes, who had a long training stint with Sania Mirza against Vishnu Vardhan and Rushmi Chakravarthi.

The leader of the squad, Davis Cup captain S.P. Misra kept his fingers crossed for a good draw. The men's and women's draw will be made on Thursday and the mixed doubles draw will be on July 31.
