India makes clean sweep, wins overall championship

India made it a clean sweep as it claimed the overall championship in both the men's and women's category of the South Asian fencing championship, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

Bangladesh finished as the runner-up in both divisions with Sri Lanka and Nepal bringing up the rear in the men's and women's categories, respectively. In most events, the Indians claimed all three spots on the podium to take their overall tally to 70 in the men's division and 78 in the women's division.

The results:

Men: Foil: 1. Robi Kumar (India ‘A'), 2. Kripal Singh (India ‘A'), 3. Bichu Singh (India ‘A').

Epee: 1. Saolin Meitei (India ‘A'), 2. Sandeep Singh (India ‘A'), 3. Dharmender Singh (India ‘A'). Sabre: 1. Ujjwal Gupta (India ‘A'), 2. Noutam Walia (India ‘A'), 3. G. Karthik (India ‘A').

Women: Foil: 1. Jasmine (India ‘A'), 2. R. Athira (India ‘A'), 3. Radhika Awati (India ‘A'). Epee: 1. Stefitha Chaljil (India ‘A'), 2. Ambili (India ‘A'), 3. Sammipreet Kaur (India ‘A'). Sabre: 1. Megha Rachan (India ‘A'), 2. V. Desni (India ‘A'), Jawaljeet Kaur (India ‘A').

Men's team (top two): Foil: 1. India ‘A' (Kripal Singh, Rabikumar Singh, Kawish Bawa, Bichu Singh), 2. Bangladesh (Ashadozzman Noor, Monir Hassail, Rasaul Kakim, Mehedi Hasan). Epee: 1. India ‘A' (Dharmender Singh, Satish Garnaik, Sandeep Kumar, A. Saolin Meitei), 2. Bangladesh (Faruk Hossain, Gopal Chandra Das, Kazi Samir Asaf, Sajid Iqbal).
