India made the quarterfinals of the team championship in Commonwealth Games badminton by burying Wales 5-0 in a Group ‘D' league match at the Siri Fort Complex on Wednesday.
India and Scotland made the knockout phase from Group ‘D' to join Malaysia, Australia (from Group ‘A'), Singapore, New Zealand (from
Group ‘B'), England and Canada (from Group ‘C') to complete the last-eight line-up.
The quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Thursday.
Having made the last-eight stage after posting clean wins over Kenya, Bardados and Wales in that order, India took a 2-0 lead over Scotland in the match to decide the group topper.
The mixed doubles duo of G. Jwala and V. Diju put India ahead with a hard-fought 21-11, 19-21, 21-18 victory over W. Briggs and I. Bankier.
P. Kashyap doubled the lead with a 21-14, 21-11 triumph over K. Meerilees.
Earlier, against Wales, Chetan Anand warmed up for the stiffer challenges ahead with an easy 21-12, 21-16 victory over Martyn Lewis.
Aditi Mutatkar, coming in for Saina for the first time in the competition, did the job expected of her by beating Carissa Turner 21-13, 21-18.
Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar spent more time on the court than on the two previous days to get past James Phillips and Joe Morgan 21-17, 21-14.
With the victory secured, Ashwini Ponnappa and Aparna Balan played without any pressure and chalked out a 21-11, 21-13 victory over Carrisa Turner and Caroline Harvey.
Jwala and Diju dismissed Martyn Lewis and Sarah Thomas 21-8, 21-5 for a 5-0 win.
Top seed Malaysia won all its league matches 5-0 in Group ‘A', like Singapore did in Group ‘B'. England and Canada faced each other to decide the topper in group ‘C'.
Meanwhile, the draw for the mixed doubles was revised after the change in seedings. However, the Indian pair of Diju and Jwala remain seeded second.
