With India preparing to bid for the 2015 World wrestling championship, which will be the qualification event for the 2016 Rio Olympics, the support of International Wrestling Federation (FILA) Bureau Member Csaba Hegedus has come as a big boost.
Hegedus, who inspected the facilities in Delhi before coming here to witness the conduct of the National championship, said India would gain immensely by hosting the 2015 Worlds.
“As far as winning more quota places for the next Olympics is concerned, the number one thing to do is to organise the 2015 World championship which will give a push to the wrestlers and coaches. You may also have support of the public (at home). You need to do more because the competition is big. India has equal chances like other contenders,” said Hegedus.
India faces strong competition from countries like the USA, Russia and Panama. According to Hegedus, who will visit the country again in January ahead of the bidding in February, the health of Indian economy might play a big role in winning the bid.
“In January, the main focus will be given to the championship bid. We shall go through the conditions that need to be fulfilled. We will also try to have discussions with potential sponsors. Knowing the importance and power of economy in India, this can be a supportive argument for the international family about awarding the championship to India.”
Hegedus, who is heading the marketing department of FILA, promised all support to India in this regard. “It is up to the FILA bureau to decide which is going to be the host city of this prestigious competition. The task is difficult. To give an example, Las Vegas is among the contenders. I am confident and supportive of your bid and I will do my best to help so that the competition is held on Indian soil.”
The FILA Bureau Member said that more knowledge about the sport and technical assistance could lift the overall quality of Indian wrestling.
