Guron shatters records to win gold

Captain Parampal Singh Guron shot down two records and the gold medal in men's skeet at the 34th National Games' shooting competition here on Monday.

Turning out for Chhattisgarh at these Games, Guron had 119 in the qualifier and 143 in the final. Services' Allan Daniel Peoples shot 118 and 141 for the silver while Baba P.S. Bedi took the bronze (119, 140). Both Guron and Bedi bettered the qualifying round record of 111 by Hoshang Noris set in 2007. Guron's 143 also bettered the record of 134 established by Amit Sanghi and Noris at Guwahati.

Guron, Bedi and National champion Mairaj Ahmad Khan combined to take the team gold for Chhattisgarh with a total of 353. Services and Punjab were second and third.

Manipur strikes it rich

Ch. Rameshori Devi of Manipur and O. Bikram Singh gave Manipur two more gold medals in the cycling event. Rameshori won her fourth straight gold, taking the women's 200m spirit. The corresponding race for men was won by her compatriot Bikram Singh. Haryana, Punjab and Services also clinched a gold each.

In the fencing competition, which began on Monday, Services' Vijay Kumar took the men's foil honours. He beat M. Tukaram of Andhra Pradesh in the final. The Manipur quartet of S. Reorita, M. Sandhyarani, L. Samashaki and R.K. Rabika Devi won the women's epee gold, pushing Punjab to the silver spot. Kerala and Chandigarh picked up the bronze medals.

Roji wins gold

W. Roji Devi of Manipur took the women's foil individual gold quelling the challenge of Jasmine of Punjab. S. Bindu Devi of Madhya Pradesh and Inderpreet Kaur of Punjab won the bronze medals.

Bengal and Services drew their final group league match to advance to the semifinals of the football event. Services topped the group on the weight of scoring more goals after goal difference failed to identify the group champion. In the other inconsequential game, Mizoram defeated Tamil Nadu 4-3.

In the semifinals, to be played on Wednesday, Services meets Punjab and Bengal clashes with Goa.

Two new marks were established in the 50m distance of the Indian round of archery competition at Jamshedpur. Sunil Oraon of Services shot 337 out of 360 to beat the previous record of 322 by Ajay Damal of Services set at Guwahati.

Anima Basumatary scored 319 out of 360 for a new mark in the women's section, erasing B. Lucy Devi's mark of 312.

30 km men's points race: 1. Atul Singh (Ser), 2. Satbir Singh (Ser), 3. Amandeep Singh (Pun).

Women's 200m sprint: 1. Ch. Rameshori (Mnp) 13.876s, 2. K. Suchitra Devi (Mnp), 3. Kezia Verghese (Ker). 4 km scratch: 1. Gurpreet Kaur (Pun) 7:27.723s, 2. V. Rejani (Ker), 3. T. Nita Devi (Mnp).

16 km women's points race: 1. Gurpreet Kaur (Pun) 31:51.4s, 2. Th. Helen Devi (Mnp), 3. V. Rejani (Ker).
