Golden double for Matthews

October 14, 2010 12:04 am | Updated 12:04 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Nick Matthew completed a golden ‘double' when he partnered Adrian Grant to win the men's doubles title but New Zealand's Joelle King missed out on a twin-triumph in the Commonwealth Games squash at the Siri Fort Complex here on Wednesday.

On a day when England, Australia and New Zealand claimed a gold and a silver each from three finals, Matthew accomplished the job he had come for.

Matthew, the current World No. 2, had claimed his maiden singles gold last week and completed a much-anticipated golden double without being stretched. The British duo defeated second-seeded Australians Stewart Boswell and David Palmer 11-9, 6-11, 11-5.

Earlier, Joelle King and Jaclyn Hawkes, seeded four, overpowered third seeds British pair Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro 11-9, 11-10 to claim the women's doubles title.

But, in the mixed doubles final that followed, Joelle was not so lucky in the company of Martin Knight. Australian top seeds Kasey Brown and Cameron Pilley battled from a one-game deficit to post a 8-11, 11-7, 11-5 victory.
